Speculation tonight is rife that the world’s longest-serving monarch will abdicate this year after she gave her firm backing to Prince Charles to replace her as Head of the Commonwealth when he becomes King. This was seen as an extraordinary intervention and has led to much chatter on social media and amongst palace observers that a huge announcement is set to be made.
New odds show punters believe the monarch will step down from the throne this year to make way for her eldest son Prince Charles. Bookies have dramatically slashed the odds on the Queen’s abdication after she told leaders of the Commonwealth gathered at Buckingham Palace that she hopes they will choose the Prince of Wales to succeed her as head of the Commonwealth.
It is thought a number of substantial bets have been made on this happening in 2018.
Bookmaker Coral slashed the odds into 2-1 from 5-1 on the Queen abdicating from the throne in 2018. A spokesperson for Coralsaid: “Following the news that Prince Charles is set to take over as the Head of the Commonwealth, we have seen a surge of bets on the Queen stepping down from the throne in 2018 where her odds have tumbled in the last 24 hours.”
