The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) has taken a claimant to court over her claims for £27,000 in benefits when she had over £40,000 in undeclared savings in the bank! Abida Khan who is a mother of 4 was in receipt of Income Support, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefits.
The mother of four received income support housing benefit and council tax relief.
The Defence Lawyer replied: “What is being denied is that Mrs Khan acted dishonestly. You have a lady without formal education, who spent the first 20 years of her life in Pakistan, before coming to the UK in circumstances which are troubling. She found herself living an isolated existence in a foreign country, without any mastery of the language let alone cultural issues. It is apparent that Mrs Khan had no knowledge of the western banking system.”
Sentencing is due on February the 21st.
